Pre-Hung doors are doors that are purchased already hinged and hung on a fully-assembled set of side
and top jambs. This also includes a threshold along the bottom if it's an exterior door. Door casing, also
known as trim, is often installed on one side of the jambs. Casing is only included with doors having eye-
brow or radius tops because the casing we provide usually differs from the trim used throughout the rest of
your home.
A pre-hung door will cost you a little more than buying components (a door, jamb, sweep, threshold,
weather-stripping, hinges and the trim) separately, but it will save you a lot of time and aggravation plus it
will most likely result in a better installation. A variety of pre-hung exterior door units are available. They
include single doors, double doors, and doors with sidelights.
Pre-hung doors are the easiest to install, but it does require you to remove the old door and its jambs or
create a new rough opening to put them in. Unfortunately, that process sometimes creates a different set of
problems. However, with a pre-hung door you will avoid having to cut the jamb, three stop pieces, and six
casing pieces; mortise and install.
Similarly, pre-hung interior doors have much of the work done for you when you receive them. But there is
still some work for you to do to ensure a perfect fit. Usually the manufacturer will leave some extra length on
each of the side jambs. This is done on purpose so you can adjust for a floor that is out of level across the
width of the door opening. This is the first thing to check for.
Sometimes it doesn’t seem practical to replace your entire door and frame. If you simply want to replace
an existing door, you can purchase a new door slab or blank which is just the door. You could also
purchase a door slab with unassembled jambs (knocked down). You can then assemble them yourself on-
site or pay a lumberyard to do that job.
Keep in mind, hanging an unassembled door is much more difficult than hanging a pre-hung door. It takes
more tools, knowledge and more time. It requires you to get a door slab, an unassembled door jamb legs,
hinges and door hardware and do all the mortising, drilling, boring, kerfing, and leveling on site.

Door Installations are extremely tricky affairs. If you haven't accomplished it before you should definitely seek the advice of an accomplished carpenter. While most contractors have their people install the doors during new construction many lack the required skills to complete the job with a long lasting quality installation. Just a few points here about door installs. If you see a nail make in your brickmold after the installation and finish the door was probably not properly installed. The only method to properly install a door is with screws and shims. The alternative is a dragging, sagging, improperly hug mess. For instructions on door installations see our service pages. A beautiful finish for a beautiful door At Designer Doors & Cabinets, we have spent years developing just the right finish for your door or complete entryway.
Doors do a lot more then just open and close. They represent a huge part of your interior design. Doors blend together one space of your home with another. For this reason, it is important that your doors not only serve their intended function, but also create a decorative flair to your interior workings. In general, homeowners choose stained wood doors to complement stained trim and painted doors to accent painted trim. What they don’t know is that by mixing these styles you can bring great attention to both. Mixing also places great focus on the door, its styling, and finish.
Painting is an easy way to compliment a room's colors. There is a virtually endless selection of colors for you to use. The best candidates for paint include cheaper hollow-core doors, wood that looks marred or flawed and also old doors with paint that resists strippers. Keep in mind, painting can become more work than staining because of its messiness and tendency to drip although the actual labor of painting is much less detailed than that of staining.
Staining is a much more difficult task to undertake. It is oftentimes preferred because a stained door allows the wood grain to be seen. This natural display of beauty gives the door character and design possibilities not afforded in other models. Using contrasting but complimentary colors is wise because matching stain to existing trim can be difficult, and some wood fillers used to cover nail heads don't stain well. Also, porous wood may require several applications. Keep in mind, once you stain a door, changing your mind to switch colors and stripping the door can be a difficult process.
Enter our Wood Finish page to view the exact process for staining a wooden door.
Our exclusive finishing system applies beautiful wood stains in any custom combination and adds the final protective layers with crystal clear top finish coats.
This produces a finish to complement the inherent beauty of the mahogany wood species.
